For those of you who love a bit of a vintage look, getting those larger sizes (as we know) can be problematic.
The hunt for original vintage isn’t without many pitfalls AND a clear lack of availability. Some Plus Size people put this down to people being smaller back then and whilst I don’t totally disagree, I believe it is also due to that vintage staple of –
‘Make Do and Mend’
Any historian of that era will agree (I hope) that clothing was handed down AND across. If a dress had a rip or a stain, it would be repurposed for a smaller or even younger body.
What was a size 10 dress with a rip, could become a ‘Sunday Best’ dress for a small child once the rip had been cut out and the dress re-made.
Larger clothing just simply doesn’t exist in the multitude of the smaller sizes. When it is available, it is hideously expensive AND quite often very dull and dowdy. More a housedress rather than a party dress.
This leaves a problem for people like me who wish to dress in that past style yet cannot get the pretty things we have an eye for.
My passion has been catered for in previous years by Unique Vintage, Vixen, Pin Up Girl Clothing and Lady V London and now I have found a new love.
Miss Candyfloss does a stunning range of reproduction vintage which goes from XS to 5XL which is around a size 26UK.
Designed in Sweden, the brand has wonderfully designed items, with quite often a mix and match theme so you can build up a capsule wardrobe.
I had been introduced to the brand by the wonderfully wardrobed Boo Brown of Does My Blog Make Me Look Fat.
She had a few items from them, one of which didn’t fit particularly well, and she passed it on to me.
That was a gorgeous, if little dark, dress which looked like a jacket and skirt. The jacket section was gray fleck, and the skirt was black.
I have loved wearing the dress and received many compliments when I have put it with original vintage accessories; Hat, bag, and jewellery.
Since then, I have not dipped my toe in the Candyfloss pool.
One of the reasons is that the items each show the sizing in inches and centimeters and the garments I had looked at all seemed to be a little small for my dimensions.
And as with many things, I had simply forgotten to have a recent look and see what was on offer.
Fast forward to the weekend of Saturday 4th June and I happened to be wilfing along on the internet and I came across a beautiful outfit and noticed that the label was Miss Candyfloss.
This was on a website based in France; Boho-Chic-Clothing.
Of course, I had to investigate it a little further as the dress was a real stunner. I noticed that there was also a complimenting jacket which would really pull the look together.
Looking at the dress first, I checked the measurements and found that it would be an almost perfect fit in my size.
The Alize Moss dress is a full skirted gray, taupe, and yellow plaid dress. Featuring a ¾ length sleeve, fitted bust with ruching and a contrasting yellow belt, it is a beautifully designed dress.
Certainly, it could be worn on its own, with no extras needed.
However in this instance, the matching Tuva Sun jacket completely transformed the look and I knew I had to purchase both items.
The Jacket is the same yellow as the belt around the dress, but has a statement double collar; the outer is yellow and the inner is the exact plaid material of the dress.
Add a cute little pleated peplum at the back and plaid covered buttons and it is absolutely perfect.
As I previously mentioned, many of the Miss Candyfloss garments can be mixed and matched.
The dress and jacket also have a pencil skirt, a full skirt and a top in the color combination so if you them all, you could have a capsule wardrobe with about a dozen purchased options.
Boho-Chic-Clothing also had quite a large sale on, which meant by ordering this outfit, I saved quite a bit of money.
The Tuva Sun jacket was down from £87.20 to £51.10, whilst the dress was even more of a bargain; £116.95 down to £55.50!
Basically it was almost buy the dress, get the jacket for free!
So, how did it fit?
Well, absolutely beautifully. The cut of the dress felt like it was made to measure; the ruched bust cupped my breasts and actually made them look covered and classy whilst not wearing something up around my ears.
Amazingly full skirted, the dress skims my legs wonderfully whilst the hang of it is also exceptional. It is cut so very well and I plan on adding a full petticoat underneath to show it off in the best way possible.
The jacket is simply stunning. Again, the design and cut is exceptional and fits like a dream. I love the double collar and the saucy little peplum is a lovely added feature.
Having a plain yellow belt is a great feature for the dress as it breaks up the plaid a little. There is also the option of wearing the belt over the top of the jacket.
Whilst this looks okay, I kind of wish it was reversible or that a plaid belt could be bought. As there is only a little plaid on the jacket, a plaid belt would give a better contrast.
All in all, I absolutely love the outfit and it may well be a contender for a Twinwood outfit. I just need to think about headwear and accessories to go with it.
I am not going to lie, I may also have bought another couple of items from Boho-Chic-Clothing; after all the sale was too good to miss out on. I will be talking about those in later posts though.
One of the things I was most impressed with was the company itself; the ordering was simple, easy and quick. I got a confirmation of my order immediately and then an email explaining that the items would be delivered by a version of European Fedex.
Now I didn’t expect super quick delivery, but that was exactly what I got. Ordering on Saturday night around 1130pm, it actually arrived on Wednesday morning at 0800! You can’t complain about that now, can you?
I was well aware that there would be a tax/duty charge to be paid due to no longer being in the EU. However, this wasn’t too bad as the price of the items had been dropped by the company upon finding out where the package was being sent.
What I mean by that is simple; when I saw the jacket it was being advertised at £61.05, but I was charged £51.10. The difference in price covered the duties that would be due on arrival in the UK.
It was exceedingly simple to pay the duties. I was sent a text to state the parcel would be arriving on Wednesday and a link to pay the duty was included. I was able to do this by Paypal and less than 20 minutes later, there was a knock on the door!
All of the garments I purchased were well wrapped and came in cotton polka dot reusable bags in white and black combinations. I assume that this is a Miss Candyfloss ‘thing’ as the garment stickers were on the outside of these bags.
It is a great little touch and I plan on reusing them for storing some of my pricier shoes in my suitcase, when I travel.
Anyway, there are a few more items on the website that I have my eye on and as it is my birthday next month I am hoping that some of them may make their way into my grabby little hands.
In fact, I may have already placed my next order!
till next time,
